Time to Mate

At the end of winter, just before spring is about to start, the bats are ready to mate. This is the time when most animals choose to mate. Spring brings with it food, warmth, and shelter, everything a pregnant animal needs to survive in the wild.

Sometimes, though, food might still be scarce. For bats, that is no problem. After impregnation, the female can hold on to the sperm for up to several months. She can choose when to impregnate herself depending on the right time.

This can lead to the time between mating and birth being anywhere from weeks to months.

The Mating

Bats typically live in colonies. Females go with their own colonies, while males go with their own or live on their own.

When they go to mate, the males will seek out female colonies. They will mate with multiple females to increase their chances of impregnation as much as possible.

Pregnant Bats

After the bat becomes pregnant, she will remain with her colony and raise her young with other bats. The bats will care for their young and hunt together.

As newborn bats cannot see or fly, and will need assistance for a few weeks until they are ready to fly and be on their own, they rely entirely on this colony to survive.

After a year and a half, the new bats are ready to restart the mating process on their own.

The mating habits of bats are simple to understand. They are a group-focused species that does not rely on coupling up, like some other animals. They rely on being together for raising their young and finding mates. Their ability to hold the sperm for their own chosen amount of time and their community focus makes their habits somewhat unique.
